Frewsburg doubles in Far West Regionals

Frewsburg did a double take on Tuesday in the Class C Far West Regionals against Rochester-area Section V champions.

The Bears baseball team will make their third appearance in states in four years after beating Lyons, 14-4, while the softball team defeated Caledonia-Mumford, 6-2.

The softball Bears' now have claimed back-to-back trips to the state final four. Last year, they beat Oakfield-Alabama, 6-2, to advance for the first time since 1997.

Forestville wasn't as fortunate in Class D softball play as the Hornets fell to Batavia Notre Dame, 7-2 in a rematch of last year's Far West Regional. Forestville lost last season to the Fighting Irish, a private school which reach the state final.

In Class D baseball, Pine Valley (15-5), which claimed its third consecutive sectional championship, plays today against Arkport. Pine Valley made back-to-back trips to the state final four in 2006 and '07.

Meanwhile, the Frewsburg baseball team takes on Section IV's Lansing, who defeated III-South Lewis 8-2, at 1 p.m. Saturday.

"It's a good feeling that our team has right now," Frewsburg coach Jay Grann said. "Our kids have worked hard and are now reaping the benefits."

The Bears' Thad Johnson, who has 199 career hits, went 3 for 4 with a triple while Connor Grey pitched five innings and struck out 10.

Frewsburg (20-4), which has captured six consecutive Section VI championships, has won 19 of its last 20 games.

"There always expectations coming into the season but the players really didn't feel a lot of pressure this year," Grann said. "They just went out and played ball."
