Joseph P. Saber, a longtime funeral director in North Tonawanda, died Saturday in the Center for Hospice & Palliative Care, Cheektowaga. He was 71.
Born in Buffalo, Mr. Saber was a graduate of Simmons School of Mortuary Science in Syracuse. He was a 41-year resident of North Tonawanda, where he owned and operated Saber Funeral Home.
Mr. Saber was a member of the Niagara County Funeral Directors Group and Erie-Niagara Funeral Directors Association.
He was an active parishioner at the former St. Joseph Catholic Church, where he was a member and recording secretary of its Holy Name Society, a bingo worker and participated in chowder sales.
Mr. Saber also was active at Our Lady of Czestochowa Catholic Church, where he was recording secretary of its Holy Name Society, served as a lector, was a bingo captain and was large-gifts chairman for the Catholic Charities Appeal.
He was a third-degree member of Madonna Council 2535, Knights of Columbus, and a fourth-degree member of Trinity Assembly. He also was a member of Dom Polski.
His interests included doing the Jumble puzzle in the daily newspaper, bowling, playing cards and spending time on Sanibel Island, Fla. He was a fan of the New York Yankees and Buffalo Sabres.
Survivors include his wife of 46 years, the former Dolores Kazmierczak; a daughter, Lynn Marie Eiswerth; and a brother, James E.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be offered at 10 a.m. Friday in Our Lady of Czestochowa Church, Oliver Street and Center Avenue, North Tonawanda.
