Romano is in the hunt

ECIC and Buffalo District Match-Play champion Andrew Romano of Depew was tied for second, one stroke off the lead, after the first round Sunday in the New York State Public High Schools Golf Championship at Cornell's Robert Trent Jones Course in Ithaca.

Ben DeForest of Rondout Valley (Section IX) is the leader with 1-under-par 71. Romano and Chris Stricek of Windsor-IV each shot even par 72. DeForest's younger brother, Ethan, was in fourth place after shooting 73.

After Romano, the best rounds by Western New York golfers were 82s by David Berkun of Williamsville North, Wil Bathurst of Olean and Nolan Ditcher of Randolph. Section VI champion Ryan Kaufman of Iroquois shot 91.

In the sectional team standings, Section VI is ninth among 11 teams with 575, 31 strokes behind the leader, Section IX.

The championship winds up today with a second 18-hole round.



*The Canisius High junior four with coxswain rowed to a fifth-place finish among six Canadian crews Sunday in the Canadian Secondary Schools Rowing Championships in St. Catharines, Ont., The Crusaders boat covered the course in 7:01.95, Vancouver College won the event in 6:43.26.

*Jackie Traina homered and threw a two-hitter, as Alabama beat top-seeded California, 5-2, on Sunday to reach the Women's College World Series finals. The Crimson Tide (58-7) will face Oklahoma (53-8), which knocked off defending champion Arizona State 5-3 in the other semifinal.
