Joseph A. Deck Sr., a midshipman in the U.S. Navy during the Korean War and self-employed real estate developer and home builder, died Friday after a long illness. He was 79.
Mr. Deck, a longtime Lewiston resident, graduated from St. Joseph's Collegiate Institute and earned his bachelor's degree from Canisius College.
At Deck & Company, he built and developed Four Seasons in Snyder and Oak Hill in Lewiston. Mr. Deck was a life member of the Bishop's Council of the Laity and a past member of Niagara Falls Country Club, Holimont Ski Club and St. Peter Catholic Church.
He enjoyed bottling wine, jazz music and traveling with his family, including annual trips white-water rafting down the Colorado River with his children when they were younger, fishing trips with his sons to the Thousand Islands and annual trips to the Indianapolis 500.
His wife, Margaret C. Carlo Deck, died March 19, 2011.
Mr. Deck is survived by two daughters, Jeanne Magavern and Elizabeth Ohle; three sons, Joseph Jr., Michael and John; and a brother, James.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be offered at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday in Our Lady of Victory Basilica, 767 Ridge Road at South Park Avenue, Lackawanna.
