UB edges Ohio for first-ever win in MAC baseball tourney

The University at Buffalo baseball team won its first Mid-American Conference Tournament game in school history on Thursday with a 6-5 extra-innings victory over Ohio University.

Meanwhile, No. 2 seed Canisius College (32-25) won its first game in the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference Tournament on a walk-off single in the ninth inning to beat Fairfield (27-27), 2-1.

Jose Torralba singled to right-center with the bases loaded to score Christian Segar in the bottom of the ninth. The Golden Griffins move on to face No. 4 seed Rider, which defeated top-seeded Manhattan on Thursday, 6-4. First pitch is scheduled for 7 p.m.

UB junior Alex Baldock hit a two-out double in the 10th to score Matt Pollock, allowing the Bulls to advance in the double-elimination tournament.

After the Bobcats tied the game at 5 with a two-out solo home run in the ninth, the Bulls responded in the bottom of the 10th. Pollock took the first pitch of the inning off his left shoulder, and Jason Kanzler knocked a single through the left side to place Pollock in scoring position. After back-to-back strikeouts, Baldock drove a 1-0 pitch into the outfield and Pollock scored the winning run.

The Bulls will play Western Michigan at 9 a.m. today, with sophomore Mike Burke likely earning the start for UB.
