Niagara-Wheatfield softball player Caitlin Attfield became the state record holder for most stolen bases in a career with 122 on Sunday breaking the previous record of 121 by Jordan Rutkowski of Alden (2003-2007).
Attfield, a senior, stole six bases in four games over the weekend at the Ace Morabito Tournament in Herkimer. "As far as I know that state record is accurate, and she is the real deal having watched her in four games," said Perry Novak, who helps compile softball records for the New York State Sportswriter's Association.
Attfield entered the season with 88 stolen bases and has 34 more. The Falcons are planning to recognize the accomplishment before their home game today against Lockport at 4:45 p.m.
The Falcons went 2-2 to finish seventh out of 16 teams in the tournament. On Saturday, Attfield had one stolen base in a 4-0 win over Valley Central and another in an 8-0 loss to eventual-champion Roy C. Ketcham of Wappingers Falls. Sunday she took two in a 4-3 loss to St. Joseph's By the Sea (Staten island) and broke the record with two thefts in a win over North Rockland.
Attfield's stay at the top could be short-lived as junior Kylee Cassavaugh of Elizabethtown-Lewis, a Class D school in Section VII, currently has 119.
