8-year-old driving ATV injured when it overturns
NEWFANE -- An 8-year-old boy was injured driving an ATV that he overturned, sending him and his 8-year-old girl passenger onto the roadway in the 2200 block of Merritt Avenue on Sunday, the Niagara County Sheriff's Office reported.
Just before 6 p.m., the young boy failed to negotiate a turn, causing the ATV to overturn onto the roadway, according to deputies. The boy suffered minor injuries and was transported to Women & Childrens Hospital by Mercy Flight as a precaution, deputies said. The girl was uninjured in the crash. The ATV owner, who was not named, was issued several traffic tickets, deputies reported.
Woman in head-on crash dies of her injuries
HARTLAND -- An Olcott woman has died of injuries suffered when her car was struck in a head-on collision Sunday on Hartland Road, the Niagara County Sheriff's Office reported Monday.
Robin Mcgirr, 49, suffered both internal and leg injuries in the 5 p.m. crash in the 2400 block of Hartland Road. She was taken by Mercy Flight to Erie County Medical Center, where she later died.
Mcgirr, the driver of a Buick, was struck by a blue Ford operated by Norman R. Blumreich, 72, of Barker, which crossed the center line, the Sheriff's Office said. Blumreich suffered arm, leg and internal injuries. He also was transported by Mercy Flight to ECMC on Sunday. He remained in critical condition Monday.
Robert Mcgirr, 44, a passenger in Mcgirr's car, was also injured in the crash and was transported to ECMC by Barker Fire Department ambulance with unknown injuries. He was in fair condition Monday.
The crash remains under investigation.
Woman, 20, is charged with DWI after crash
LOCKPORT -- A Lockport woman injured in a crash Sunday on Rapids Road has been charged with driving while intoxicated, the Niagara County Sheriff's Office reported Monday.
Samantha Hines, 20, of Plank Road, was also charged with failure to keep right.
Police responding to a 911 call found a pickup had a struck a pole at 3:24 a.m. Sunday in the 7200 block of Rapids Road. Hines was found unresponsive in the driver's seat.
The Rapids Volunteer Fire Company also responded to the scene, using the Jaws of Life to remove Hines from the truck. She was taken by Mercy Flight to Erie County Medical Center and Monday was in fair condition, according to deputies.
Boy accidentally shot in hand by BB gun
LOCKPORT -- A boy was injured when he was accidentally shot in the hand by a BB gun at 10:30 p.m. Saturday in the 6900 block of Akron Road, according to the Niagara County Sheriff's Office.
The Akron Road boy was was found by deputies with a BB shot in the palm of his hand. The injured boy and another juvenile were involved in horseplay and struggling with the gun when it went off, striking one of the boys.
The injured boy was taken to Eastern Niagara Hospital, Lockport, for treatment. The parents of the two boys were interviewed, and deputies said they determined that there was no criminal activity.
Crash of stolen car brings probation
LOCKPORT -- A Buffalo man who plowed a stolen car into a Wheatfield snowbank last year avoided jail time Monday.
Bruce B. Bidwell, 40, of Elmwood Avenue, who has been diagnosed with bipolar disorder, was placed on five years' probation by Niagara County Judge Sara Sheldon Farkas.
He stole a 1997 Plymouth Breeze from the Canisius College parking lot in Buffalo on March 7 and crashed it into a snowbank at a Wilson Farms store at Niagara Falls Boulevard and Ward Road in Wheatfield. Bidwell pleaded guilty to fourth-degree criminal possession of stolen property.
"I believe it was because he was taking the wrong medications," Farkas said. "[Bidwell] has a long history of mental health issues, some of them very profound. He's been hospitalized 30 times for mental health issues."
Two plead not guilty in unrelated burglaries
LOCKPORT -- Two men pleaded not guilty recently to second-degree burglary in separate Niagara County Court arraignments.
Ulysses R. Jones, 22, of Ashland Avenue, Niagara Falls, is charged with breaking into a home on Mountain View Drive in Lewiston on Jan. 30. Police said they caught him and another man, who was not indicted, inside the home.
Jones was arraigned April 18 on an unrelated drug indictment accusing him of possessing 1.1 grams of crack cocaine and some Xanax when Falls police stopped his car Jan. 18.
Also, Dennis M. Schultz, 20, of Olcott Street, Lockport, denied entering a home on Ridgewood Drive in the Town of Lockport on March 14.
Police said Schultz had a wallet allegedly stolen from the home when they caught him on Chestnut Ridge Road. Besides burglary, the indictment accuses Schultz of grand larceny, possession of stolen property and possession of burglary tools.
