Erik Rogers' stay in the National Golden Gloves Tournament of Champions was brief, but Emanuel Colon extended his in Mesquite, Nev.
Colon cruised past 141-pounder Javonn Barnes of Michigan, 5-0, Wednesday to earn a spot in tonight's quarterfinals. New York State Golden Gloves President Don Patterson said Colon was dominant against a past national tournament participant.
He's Buffalo's lone representation in the tournament as he won a day after Rogers, a super heavyweight, dropped a 4-1 decision to New York Metro Gloves champ Elijah Thomas.
Rogers, a Burgard grad and former football player for the Bulldogs and the University at Buffalo, earned a spot in the tournament when New York State champion Drew Graziadei pulled out with a torn hamstring.
Rogers was hoping inexperience would get served and it almost did, even though he drew a first-round foe with national experience. Thomas came within a win of reaching the quarterfinals last year.
