LaBella Associates, an architectural and engineering firm, named Kailee Neuner a planner in the planning division in the Buffalo office. A recent master's graduate of the University at Buffalo, Neuner was previously the research coordinator for the Healthy Kids, Healthy Communities -- Buffalo Initiative.

Foit-Albert Associates, Architecture, Engineering, and Surveying, appointed Richard J. Neet a GIS specialist/civil engineer technician in the firm's engineering group. Neet, who earned his associate degree at Hudson Valley Community College, has more than 14 years' experience in the GIS/civil engineer arena.

Harper International, a Lancaster-based provider of thermal processing solutions for advanced materials, launched Beacona, a new program offering carbon fiber manufacturers the ability to evaluate the carbon footprint of their manufacturing process and identify opportunities for improvement. Harper has developed a model that analyzes various plant configurations and capacities, precursors, integration scenarios and energy recovery options, and ranks the environmental impact of the process line. This establishes a baseline and a facility-specific metric that can be used to develop improvement plans to drive greater energy recovery and lower operating costs.

Employees of BlueCross BlueShield of Western New York donated $20,000 to 20 local charities. The following 20 organizations each received a $1,000 contribution: 2nd Chance Animal Shelter, ASPCA, Bornhava, Breast Cancer Network of WNY, Buffalo City Mission, Buffalo Humane Animal Rescue, Camp Good Days, Cradle Beach, Food Bank of WNY, Friends of the Night, Helping our Heroes, Hospice Buffalo, Make-a-Wish, Mercy Flight, Ronald McDonald House, Roswell Park Cancer Institute, SPCA, St. Luke's Mission of Mercy, Ten Lives Cat Club, and Wings Flight. Earlier in 2012, the company donated $157,000 to the United Way's 2012 campaign, in addition to its employees donating thousands of volunteer hours each year.
