For the third year in a row, the federal government is offering the public a safe way to dispose of dangerous prescription drugs.
National Prescription Drug Take-Back Day, part of a campaign to reduce the supply of unwanted and unneeded drugs, will be held from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday at dozens of locations in Western New York.
The nationwide effort -- this is the fourth take-back day in three years -- has resulted in nearly 500 tons of prescription drugs being turned in, no questions asked.
Of that, about 10 tons has come from Western New York.
"A medicine chest in your home can be a threat," U.S. Attorney William J. Hochul Jr. said Wednesday. "Our message this Saturday is, 'If you see something, do something.' "
The event helps the public safely dispose of prescription drugs that could fall into the hands of children or addicts or, when flushed down the toilet, get into the water system.
