THOMPSON, Albert James, Jr.
THOMPSON - Albert James, Jr. Died Monday, April 16, 2012, in the Veterans' Administration Medical Center, in Buffalo. Only living son of Albert J. and Estelle (Suber) Thompson, Sr., "Daddy Al", as he was known by his family, was recognized for achieving over four decades of accident-free driving as a Niagara Frontier Transit Authority bus driver. He was the first transit worker to drive a Buffalo subway train, and was coaxed out of retirement to drive for the N.F.T.A. as a P.A.L. van driver, responsible for transporting physically-disabled individuals to medical appointments. He is survived by his devoted wife, Mattie M. (Lewis) Thompson; three daughters, Edmonia D. Watkins (Timothy), Pamela T. Sharpe (Ronald-deceased), Yvonne D. Askew (Marvin); three grandsons, Aric D. Shelton (Sari), Marvin R. Askew, II, and Brian P. Askew (J-Shawna); five great-grandchildren, Lynazia Harris, Arica and Alexis Shelton, Taylor Kaye and Noah Cordero; sisters-in-law Sarah Lewis, Viola Lewis (Wardell-deceased); brother-in-law, Robert Lewis (Frances-deceased); cousin Maryama (Ramadhan) Jackson; and a host of nieces, nephews and other relatives, friends and other N.F.T.A. employees.
