Man charged in attack with acid

A man retrieving his belongings from a Lockport apartment threw acid on the female resident in a fit of rage, burning the woman and endangering her baby, Niagara County Sheriff's Office investigators said Thursday.

The 22-year-old victim told deputies that Jeffrey Mang, 23, of Ransomville came to her Robinson Road apartment just after 4 p.m. Tuesday. She said she told him he could not come in and that he needed to wait in his car while she put his belongings in the hallway of the apartment building.

He apparently waited for a while, hiding in the hallway, and then forced his way into her apartment, the victim told deputies. Mang pushed the victim into the apartment, where she fell on the floor. Mang then threw things into the bedroom, where the woman's infant daughter was sleeping on the bed, deputies reported.

The woman said she was yelling for police when Mang grabbed a bottle of acid and threw some into the fish tank, then splashed it around the apartment and in the bedroom. She said Mang then knelt on her, poured acid on her and fled.

A neighbor who witnessed the attack from the hallway gave the victim a phone so she could call police.

When deputies arrived, the victim was crying and yelling that her skin was burned, trying to rinse the acid off her body with water. Deputies said they found a bottle of acid on the kitchen counter.

The victim was transported by ambulance to Eastern Niagara Hospital in Lockport, where she was treated for burns on her face, neck, chest and arms. She then was released. Her baby was transported to Women & Children's Hospital of Buffalo as a precaution, but no injuries were reported, according to the Sheriff Office.

Mang was arraigned Wednesday night in Lockport Town Court on charges of felony second-degree assault and endangering the welfare of a child. He was remanded to Niagara County Jail on bail of $2,500.
