Gerbe heads to Worlds

Nathan Gerbe started the season in Finland with the Sabres. He's headed back there with Team USA.

USA Hockey named the first 17 members of its world championships team today, and Gerbe is one of 11 forwards selected.

Sabres coach Lindy Ruff has turned down an offer to coach Canada's team, reports. Considered a front-runner for the position, Ruff told The News following Saturday's season finale he had made no commitment.

Buffalo goaltender Ryan Miller said this week he will not play in the tournament, which begins May 4 in Helsinki. The bronze- and gold-medal games will be held May 20.

Baylor hoops sanctioned

The NCAA put Baylor on three years of probation Wednesday after an investigation turned up hundreds of impermissible telephone calls and text messages sent to prep recruits by coaches and assistants on the basketball teams.

The violations were considered to be major infractions, and they were announced less than a week after the Lady Bears won the national title with the first 40-0 season in NCAA history. All of the penalties were proposed by the school and accepted by the NCAA after a review of nearly 900,000 cell records.

Petrino, mistress talked often

Former Arkansas coach Bobby Petrino and his 25-year-old mistress, Jessica Dorrell, exchanged more than 4,300 text messages and nearly 300 phone calls over the past seven months -- on game days, before dawn and even as the police report that hastened his downfall was being released to the public, according to a review of his business cellphone records by The Associated Press.

The messages, among some 300 pages of records released under a Freedom of Information Act request, appear to include picture and video files, though there was no way to verify the content.

Ciminelli sixth at TOC

Ryan Ciminelli stood in sixth place Wednesday with five games left in the Elite Field qualifying standings for the PBA Tournament of Champions at Red Rock Lanes in Las Vegas, Nev. Ciminelli's pinfall was 3,550 for 15 games (236.7 average). Sean Rash of Montgomery, Ill., was the leader with 3,657. Jack Jurek of Lackawanna was tied for 27th with 3,379 while Brad Angelo of Lockport was 43rd with 3,298.
