RATHMANN-ELLIS, Myrtle J.

RATHMANN-ELLIS - Myrtle J. April 3, 2012 in Corning, NY. She is survived by two brothers Clyde L. Rathmann (wife Marilyn) of Corning, NY and Daniel P. Rathmann (wife Patricia) of Moscow, Idaho; aunt of Mark A. Rathmann, Carol L. (Rathmann) Simon, Lisa Beth (Rathmann) Stewart, and Kurt D. Rathmann. Myrtle was born May 11, 1921 in Buffalo, NY, eldest child of Ella A. (Schulz) and Paul F. Rathmann. She lived with her parents in Chicago, IL from 1923-935, and the family returned to the Buffalo area in 1935 to live in Kenmore, NY. Myrtle graduated from Kenmore High School in 1938 and enrolled in the Millard Fillmore Hospital School of Nursing, graduating in 1942. As an RN, she worked as head nurse on the surgical floor at the hospital, then as a nurse in the warplane industry. After the war, Myrtle was Chief Nurse in the Red Cross Blood Program. In 1952, she earned her Bachelors in Nursing Education, followed by a Masters in 1960. Myrtle became the Director of the School of Nursing in 1954, a position that she held until 1985. During Myrtle's tenure, she achieved her goal of having the school accredited and she maintained that accreditation for over 30 years until the hospital program became part of the University of Buffalo. During retirement, Myrtle authored the history of Millard Fillmore Hospital's School of Nursing for its 100th year celebration in 1987. Myrtle was married to the late Richard F. Ellis on February 24, 1979 at All Saints Episcopal Church in Williamsville, NY. Myrtle was also a long-term member and Lay Reader at All Saints Church. Burial will be at Elmlawn Cemetery in Kenmore, NY, next to her husband.
