National leadership seminar to focus on power of choice

OLEAN -- The Chick-fil-A Leadercast, a one-day leadership development seminar for community and business leaders, will be offered May 4 in the Cutco Theater on the Olean Campus of Jamestown Community College. In its 12th year, this year's program will focus on the power of choice.

The live broadcast from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. from Atlanta features a lineup of speakers that includes CNN anchorwoman Soledad O'Brien; NFL quarterback Tim Tebow; John Maxwell, best-selling author of "The 21 Irrefutable Laws of Leadership"; Ronald Fryer, professor of economics at Harvard University and CEO of the Education Innovation Laboratory; and Sheena Iyengar, author of "The Art of Choosing."

Arts grants available for Buffalo River projects

Individual grants of up to $10,000 are available for programming along the Buffalo River from May 26 to Oct. 31.

Arts Services Initiative of Western New York announced last week a request for proposals with $82,500 available for qualified organizations and individuals. Programs and events will be considered at several sites, including Buffalo River Fest Park, Silo City grain elevators, Mutual Riverfont Park, Father Conway Park and the river itself.

Funding is made possible through Erie Canal Harbor Development Corp. A similar RFP has already been issued for Canalside. The deadline to apply is noon April 25. For more information, go to www.asiwny.org.

Group's awards banquet will honor youth mentors

Stop the Violence Coalition Inc. will hold its fourth annual awards banquet from 6 to 10 p.m. April 28 in Creekside Manor, 2669 Union Road, Cheektowaga.

This year's theme -- MENTORS: Mentoring, Education, Nurturing to Overcome Real Life Situations -- honors people who mentor youth and offer them opportunities to succeed.

Erie County Legislator Timothy R. Hogues will be the keynote speaker. Activities include a silent auction, raffles and door prizes, awards presentations and dancing.

Banquet tickets cost $50 per person and gold, silver and bronze sponsorships are available. The deadline for tickets and advertising submissions for the souvenir journal is April 16.

St. John the Baptist School offering open house

St. John the Baptist School in the Town of Tonawanda will offer an open house for parents considering a Catholic education for their children.

Parents are invited to to attend with their child, age 4 to 7, and meet teachers, staff, parents and students at the Read & Run for Fun event from 10:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. April 28.
