Masters Update 12:40 p.m.
AUGUSTA, Ga. -- U.S. Open champion Rory McIlroy has birdied three of the first seven holes today, drawing within a shot of the lead during the second round of the Masters. McIlroy, last year's 54-hole leader at Augusta National, was 3-over par for the tourney through the first 16 holes Thursday. Now he's at minus-4.
It has not been a big scoring day so far. Co-leader leader Lee Westwood "Nick Faldo-ed" the front nine with nine consecutive pars. Sweden's Peter Hanson joined Westwood atop the board by going 1-under through six.
Ian Poulter had the birdie of the day. Situated in the bushes behind the par-5 13th, Poulter somehow got the ball to within 3 feet and made the putt. He's at 2-under.
Sergio Garcia -- remember him??? -- also is on the move. Garcia, still in search of a major, is 3-under for the day and the tournament. But be forewarned: In each of his first 13 Masters he always shot a round of 74 or worse.
