As half of the Benevento-Russo Duo, Marco Benevento melted more than a few faces with a 2007 performance as part of Thursday at the Square. Playing off of Russo's dense polyrhythms and immaculate grooves, Benevento ran his keyboards through a variety of effects at the Square gig, shifting the shapes of notes and amplifying the melodic power of lines with a mad scientist's glee.
These days, Benevento and Russo are engaged outside of their duo -- Russo as a member of Furthur and Benevento with his own trio. In this forum, Benevento has stretched the idiomatic envelope even further, rather effortlessly blurring the lines between jazz, rock, jam band and alternative musics with the integrity of a true individualist.
To be afforded the opportunity to catch a talented outfit like the Benevento Trio in an intimate club feels like a privilege. Indulge that privilege at 10 p.m. Thursday in Nietzsche's (248 Allen St.), when Benevento is joined by Buffalo's Logo City (featuring members of Peanut Brittle Satellite and Lazlo Hollyfeld) and Brooklyn's MK Groove project. Tickets are $15 at the door. For more information, visit www.ecepresents.com.
