Bisons fall a game short

The Buffalo Bisons' only loss in the USA Hockey Tier I 16-under championships in Marlborough, Mass., was a tough one to take.

Assabet Valley (Mass.) edged the Bisons, 3-2, in Sunday's championship game. Maddie Elia scored both Buffalo goals. Assabet led, 3-1, when Elia tallied with 1:45 left in the third period.

Madison Welch made 18 saves for the Bisons, who had won their first five games in the nationals, outscoring their opponents, 27-9.

Earlier Sunday, Julianna Iafallo scored three goals and assisted on two others to lead the Bisons over Team Pittsburgh, 6-2, in the semifinals. Allison Gasuik had two goals and two assists, Madison Sansone had a goal and Maddie Elia had three assists in the victory.

The Bisons got strong goaltending from Welch, who made 36 stops.

Meanwhile in Frisco, Texas, the surprising run of the West Seneca Wings in the Tier II 12-under girls championship ended Sunday with a 3-0 loss to the Glenview Stars (Ill.).

Glenview's tight checking limited the Wings to 12 shots and kept scoring star Jennelle Platt off the board in the championship game. Platt had seven goals in West Seneca's two games Saturday.

Wings goalie Brianna Gawronski made 23 saves and had a 2.03 goals-against average for the tournament.

The Wings, the first West Seneca team to qualify for a USA Hockey championship, went 4-2 in the nationals. West Seneca avenged its 5-1 loss to the San Jose Junior Shares in pool play by routing the California team, 7-2, in Saturday's semifinals.

Also in Frisco, Megan Kubichek scored the winning goal with 1:53 left in regulation to give the Alaska Icebreakers a 2-1 victory over the Buffalo Regals in the 14-under championship game.
