Buffalo girls teams still in contention; Jr. Purple Eagles, 14-under Bisons lose

Three Buffalo area girls youth hockey teams were still alive in national tournaments.

Maddie Elia scored three goals and assisted on another and Allison Gasuik had two goals and an assist as the Buffalo Bisons defeated the Connecticut Polar Bears, 7-2, to remain unbeaten in Tier I 16U in Marlborough, Mass. Buffalo will face Team Pittsburgh this morning in a semifinal.

In Tier I 14U at Marlborough, Kayleigh Rahbany's first-period goal stood up as the East Coast Wizards (Mass.) eliminated the Buffalo Bisons, 1-0, in the semifinals. Rachael Farmer made 22 saves in the loss. Earlier, Ashley Songin scored in the second overtime to give the Bisons a 3-2 win over the Mid-Fairfield (Conn.) Stars.

In girls Tier II play in Frisco, Texas, the Buffalo Regals edged the Michigan Icebreakers , 3-2, on Emma Ruggiero's third period goal to reach the championship round in 14U. Brynn Wopperer and Alyse Borelli had the other Regals goals. Earlier, Ruggiero, Wopperer and Maddie Norton each scored twice in an 8-1 rout of the Greenwich (Conn.) Wings.

Jenelle Platt scored four times to lead the West Seneca Wings over the San Jose Jr. Sharks, 7-2, in the 12U semifinals. The Wings will play the Glenview (Ill.) Stars for the championship today. Earlier, Platt scored three times as the Wings defeated the Princeton (N.J.) Tiger Lillies, 4-0.

In Lansing, Mich., Andy Martin scored at 8:03 of overtime to give the Sylvania Maples Leafs of Ohio a 3-2 victory over the Niagara Junior Purple Eagles in the semifinals of the Tier II 18U boys championship. Sean Dungan and Cory Becker scored for Niagara.

Niagara came from behind twice and defeated the Mid-State Mustangs of Western Pennsylvania, 4-3, earlier Saturday. Justin Frentzel scored the winning goal.

In the boys Tier I tournaments at Northtown Center in Amherst, the Long Island Royals coached by former Buffalo Sabre Pat LaFontaine earned a place in today's 16U championship game when Michael Marnell scored his second of the game at 8:27 of overtime for a 5-4 triumph over Chicago Mission.

Long Island will face the Dallas Stars Elite for the title at 11 a.m. Dallas edged the L.A. Junior Kings, 2-1, in the semis.

It will be Shattuck St. Mary's (Minn.) against L.A. Junior Kings for the 18U championship at 11:30 a.m. today. Shattuck defeated the Cape Cod Whalers, 7-4, and L.A. blanked the Pittsburgh Hornets, 2-0, in Saturday night's semifinals.

The St. Louis Blues and Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Junior Knights advanced to the 14U championship. St. Louis shut out Shattuck St. Mary's, 4-0, while Wilkes-Barre/Scranton triumphed over Belle Tire, 4-1, in semifinals.

Chicago Mission and the New Jersey Colonials will play for the 12U championship. Chicago defeated L.A. Selects, 5-1, and Colonials topped Detroit Compuware, 3-1.
