This Day in Buffalo Sports History: A huge addition

August 2, 1984 -- It was one of those little transactions that was merited a few paragraphs of writing in this newspaper, and was merely a line in the transactions listing everywhere else.

The Bills had hired Bill Polian as the team's director of pro personnel.

Little did we know on that summer day in 1984 what a difference that would make.

Polian had worked with the Kansas City Chiefs, the Chicago Blitz of the United States Football League, and the Winnipeg Blue Bombers of the Canadian Football League. He learned about the sport along the way.

After the equivalent of two seasons, Polian was hired as the Bills' general manager. Slowly but surely, he put together the team that went to four straight Super Bowls. We'll have to see if that achievement is ever duplicated, but no one is counting on it.

Polian left Carolina, and then moved on to Indianapolis. He's won every step of the way. Polian certainly ranks as one of the most important people in Bills' football history.
