CROWTHER, Dorothy Louise Allen

CROWTHER - Dorothy Louise Allen Died Thursday, January 27, at Carol Woods Retirement Community. She was born in Boston, MA on August 5, 1916, the daughter of Catherine Dunn Allen and John Edgar Allen. She attended secondary schools in Boston and Buffalo, NY and graduated from Amherst High School in 1934 and the University of Buffalo, with a magna cum laude degree in English, in 1938. She later earned a M.Ed. at Alfred University. She taught high school English at Forestville High School and Belmont Central High School, and retired from teaching in 1971. She married Lt. Harold Baker Crowther USN, in Snyder, NY, on June 21, 1941. She lived in Halifax, Nova Scotia, Norfolk, VA, and Charleston, SC during her husband's naval service in the Second World War. They lived and taught in upstate New York until his death in 1983, and she maintained a home in Belmont until she moved to Chapel Hill in 2000. After retiring from teaching she worked as librarian at the Belmont Literary and Historical Society and served on the advisory council of the Allegany County Office for the Aging. In Chapel Hill she was a member of Elders for Peace and the Universalist-Unitarian Church of the Larger Fellowship. Mrs. Crowther was predeceased by her husband and her brother, John E. Allen, Jr. She is survived by her sons, Harold B. Crowther, Jr. of Hillsborough and his wife Lee Smith, and Jeffrey A. Crowther of Statesboro, GA; her sister, Muriel Allen Braun, of Muncie, IN; one granddaughter, Amity Crowther Ferguson of Raleigh, and two great-granddaughters, Ellery and Baker Ferguson; three nieces, two nephews, and four step-grandchildren. A memorial service will be held at Carol Woods in February. Memorials may be sent to the UU Church of the Larger Fellowship and Habitat For Humanity.
