Five Spot / Quick hitters on the light side

1. DELAY OF GAME

A different Favre -- Brett's sister Brandi (above), 34 -- made headlines last week when police busted her inside a condo turned meth lab in Diamondhead, Miss. The best part came when she entered her plea: "Guilty er, not guilty er, can I let you know before training camp?"

2. MUTE POINT

The Canadian Broadcast Standards Council, calling it too offensive for the airwaves, has banned the 1985 Dire Straits song "Money for Nothing." There went the Maple Leafs' next radio jingle.

3. BIMBO ALERT

Major League Soccer's Philadelphia Union landed a new sponsor: Bimbo Bakeries USA. Tiger Woods immediately requested a tryout.

4. GOING BOWLING

If the BCS ran the NFL, you realize, we'd be about a month away from a Patriots-Falcons Super Bowl. And the Giants would be 1 1/2 -point favorites over the Buccaneers in, say, the Poulan Weedeater.

5. SO, HOW COLD IS IT?

"It's so cold outside," wrote Mike Bianchi of the Orlando Sentinel, "that I saw Cecil Newton with his hands in his own pockets."

-- Dwight Perry, Seattle Times
