Rose A. Griffin, 95, retired nurse, anesthetist ; April 16, 1915 -- Jan. 6, 2011

Rose A. Griffin of Williamsville, a retired nurse, died Thursday in St. Mary's of the Angels Convent, 201 Reist St., Williamsville. She was 95.

The former Rose A. Herzing was born in St. Marys, Pa., and at age 17 won a scholarship to attend the University of Buffalo, where she earned her bachelor of science degree in nursing.

She later became one of the area's first nurse anesthetists. Mrs. Griffin worked at E.J. Meyer Memorial Hospital for many years and eventually retired from Buffalo General Hospital in the early 1970s.

Her husband, John M., died in 1987.

Survivors include three daughters, Sister Patricia, Kathleen M. Paine and Karen Benz; and three sons, John F., Michael C. and Richard P.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be offered at 10 a.m. Monday in St. Joseph University Catholic Church, 3269 Main St.
