Ryan salutes Manning, tweaks Brady: Rex Ryan tweaked Tom Brady while he praised Peyton Manning. The New York Jets coach said Thursday that "nobody" studies like Manning, the Indianapolis Colts quarterback whom Ryan's team faces in a first-round playoff matchup Saturday night. Not even the New England Patriots quarterback. "I know Brady thinks he does," Ryan said. "I think there's a little more help from [Bill] Belichick with Brady than there is with Peyton Manning." The Jets would face the Patriots next in the playoffs if they get by the Colts.
Garrett passes audition: Dallas Cowboys owner Jerry Jones took the interim label off Jason Garrett and made him -- officially -- the eighth head coach in team history. He's also the first head coach who also played for the Cowboys, as he was a backup to Troy Aikman in the 1990s. According to Jones, Garrett will have a say in who stays and who goes, including the coaches, in the Cowboys' planned overhaul.
It's Hasselbeck for Seahawks: Matt Hasselbeck will get the nod at quarterback for the Seattle Seahawks in Saturday's playoff game against New Orleans. Charlie Whitehurst started the season finale against the Rams that got the team into the postseason. Hasselbeck threw for 366 yards in a 34-19 loss to the Saints in the regular season.
Mularkey cancels with Broncos: Atlanta Falcons offensive coordinator Mike Mularkey has canceled his scheduled Friday interview with the Denver Broncos about their head coaching vacancy to focus on planning for the Falcons' upcoming playoff game. Mularkey will go ahead with his interview with the Cleveland Browns Saturday.
