David G. Westervelt, a retired teacher for the Sweet Home Central School District, died Wednesday in McCauley Residence, Town of Tonawanda, after a lengthy illness. He was 83.
Born in Lyndhurst, N.J., Mr. Westervelt was an Army veteran of World War II, participating in the Normandy invasion.
After the war, he moved to this area and worked as a chemical analyst for the Linde Division of Union Carbide Corp.
When he was laid off from Linde, Mr. Westervelt went back to college and earned a master's degree in education from Buffalo State Teachers College. He was a member of Phi Beta Kappa.
Mr. Westervelt taught math and science at Sweet Home Senior High School from the 1970s to the late 1990s.
Survivors include a daughter, Kathy Parrish, and a son, Gary.
