Maddon, Philly fans have sudsy debate

Maddon PHILADELPHIA -- Like I said Saturday, loquacious Tampa Bay manager Joe Maddon has emerged as a hidden gem with the media during this postseason. He was at his best again today in his daily briefing prior to Game Four of the World Series.

Asked if he got any sleep after the Rays' 5-4 loss that stretched to 1:47 a.m., Maddon quipped, "4:30 [a.m.] to 1 [p.m.]. How's that? It worked?"

Later on, somebody asked Maddon if the notoriously tough Philly fans match up to leatherlungs in Boston and New York. Maddon grew up about an hour outside of Philly and went to Lafayette College so he knows the area well. He said Saturday he was at dinner in a downtown wine bar Friday night and had all kinds of well-wishers approach him.

Before Game Three, Maddon said he was chiding some fans near the Rays' dugout for, of all things, their choice of beer.

"These guys are drinking Coors Lite in Philadelphia. That was very inappropriate," Maddon said. "I couldn't believe that. We went back and forth and I said, "Where's the Schmidt's man? Let's go. At least some Rolling Rock. Don't be going with the Coors Lite. That is so unfashionable for a Philly dude. I was all over him about that so we had a good time.

"My biggest concern with the fans here is the family section. Throwing mustard packs at my granddaughter is not very cool. If you want to be vociferous with us, I am fine with that. If you want to have arguments about Coors Lite vs. Rolling Rock, I'm good with that. But leave the families alone."
