PHILADELPHIA -- Rays manager Joe Maddon is a prince to deal with and is as well-spoken as any manager we've ever seen at a World Series. He just sparked howls of laughter in the press room during his pregame news conference by using the word "ameliorates." Seriously.
He was talking about how nice the clubhouse is here to spend time during a rain delay compared to a place like the tiny room at Fenway Park. There's big-screen TVs, video games and some nice Philly cheesesteaks for players to make. At Fenway, guys sit in cramped quarters in front of their lockers crushing pizza and basically wishing they were somewhere else.
"This kind of facility ameliorates that situation a bit and permits you to get through the moment," Maddon said.
