Gabriel Guzman, 32, of Brooklyn has been identified as the victim of a fatal shooting that occurred Tuesday in Dunkirk.
Police Chief David Ortolano said Friday that a person of interest is currently being detained in what is an apparent homicide. He said that person was taken into custody on a parole violation.
Chautauqua County District Attorney David Foley would not say why Guzman was in Dunkirk, although he does have family in the area.
State police and other local police agencies are involved in the investigation. Also, Fredonia police were contacted shortly after the homicide.
Guzman was shot in the abdomen, according to Foley. Police responded to a 911 call at 506 Deer St., and Guzman was taken to Brooks Memorial Hospital, where he later died.
Both police and the district attorney's office said they do not believe there is more than one suspect.
