Public meeting to focus on future of Wintergarden

NIAGARA FALLS -- A presentation focused on potential adaptive reuses of the former Wintergarden will be held from 1:30 to 3:30 p.m. Saturday in Niagara Falls Public Library, 1425 Main St.

Carrie Bergey, a Lewiston native who completed a master's degree thesis on Niagara Falls development issues earlier this year at the University of Pennsylvania, will present potential ideas for the reuse of the former glass arboretum. The meeting is open to the public and is designed to promote discussion about the future of the building.

A state agency, USA Niagara Development Corp., has announced plans to purchase the building and demolish it by next spring. The agency plans to build a street in the space that would connect Niagara Falls State Park with the Seneca Niagara Casino & Hotel.

Bass scholarship is seeking applicants

NIAGARA FALLS -- Students who would like to attend Niagara Catholic High School but need financial assistance may apply for the new SSG. Aram J. Bass Fund Scholarship.

Starting next school year, a scholarship will be offered annually by the family and friends of Bass, a war hero who lost his life in Operation Iraqi Freedom.

Dionne Kane, a spokeswoman for the fund, said anyone wishing to attend Niagara Catholic may apply for the scholarship by going to the Web site, ssg-arambass.com, and following instructions.

Applications must be submitted by mid-December. Kane said she still does not know how much the scholarship will be worth because Bass' family and friends are still in the process of raising funds for it.

Anyone wishing to contribute to the scholarship fund may do so by mailing the donation to SSG. Aram J. Bass Scholarship Fund in care of Niagara Catholic High School, 520 66th St., Niagara Falls, NY, 14304.
