Dunkirk upsets Springville
With about 18 minutes left in regulation Zack Silwa deflected a ball on the left side and sent it to the far post to give No. 12 seed Dunkirk a 2-1 win over No. 5 Springville in Section VI Class B boys soccer prequarterfinal action.
"Even though we were a lower seed and had a difficult regular season, we never stopped believing in ourselves," Dunkirk coach Jim Enser said. "We have been a good, strong defensive team and we don't usually lose when we only give up one goal."
Dunkirk improved to 5-9-2 overall while Springville ended its season at 13-4-1.
Also in Class B prequarterfinal action, senior Josh Heusinger scored three goals to help Wilson to a 6-1 win over Fredonia. Odane Todd added two goals for Wilson (9-5-2).
"It was a total effort," coach Chris Alex said. "Heusinger stepped up with some beautiful goals. One was a breakaway in which he brought the goalie to the left side and flicked it into the right."
Franklinville earns win
Franklinville earned its first playoff win in boys soccer with a 2-1 overtime decision over Salamanca in a Class C prequarterfinal. Dylan Ballard scored on a free kick from about 25 yards out three minutes into the extra session. Cole Bielecki scored the first goal for the Panthers (4-14-1) and Tim Kuhn recorded six saves.
With two goals in the second half Iroquois advanced in the Section VI Class A girls soccer playoffs with a 2-0 win over Williamsville South.
Chelsea Oberkrieser scored on a penalty shot about seven minutes into the second half to break a scoreless tie. Danielle Braun added another goal at 12:41.
"The first half was pretty even," Iroquois coach Ric Weber said. "The kids came out and played great defense in the second half. We had nice teamwork. We passed the ball well and completed some plays we missed out on in the first half. We just got more aggressive in the second half."
Marisa Martinez recorded the shutout for Iroquois (12-6).
Also in Class A, Marissa Chassee charged the net to put in a rebound and with about 10 minutes left give Starpoint a 1-0 win over Kenmore East. Chelsey Reed had the shutout.
Taylor Armstrong scored in the 26th minute of the second half to give Albion a 2-1 win over Depew. Ashley Walter made 11 saves for Albion (14-5).
Gehen gets OT winner
D.J. Gehen scored in the eighth minute of overtime as West Seneca West recorded a 3-2 win over Jamestown in Class AA girls soccer prequarterfinal action. West (5-10-1) had taken a 2-0 lead in the first half with Jamestown tying the game in the second.
"We outplayed them in the first half and they outplayed us in the second," West Seneca West coach Rich Joslyn said. "Our goalie [Meg Sudyn] made some key saves in the second half."
Also in Class AA, Marissa Wright placed the ball in the top-right corner of the net from 18 yards to give Lockport a 3-2 OT win over Lancaster.
Nowicki scores twice
Shannon Nowicki scored with 3:28 left to play to psuh West Seneca East a 3-2 win over Kenmore East in Class B field hockey prequarterfinal action. Nowicki scored two goals for West Seneca East (8-12), which advanced to play Williamsville South on Friday.
Meanwhile, Chelsea Boggess scored three goals to pace Starpoint in a 5-1 win over East Aurora.
