James Jemison Sr., Army veteran of Vietnam served for 29 years
May 14, 1943 -- Oct. 15, 2008

James E. Jemison Sr., who joined the Army in 1964, served in the Vietnam War and was later stationed in Korea and Germany during a 29-year career, died Wednesday in Veterans Affairs Medical Center after a brief illness. He was 65.

Mr. Jemison, a 1961 graduate of Bennett High School, retired from the Army Reserve as a sergeant.

Nicknamed "Sonny," he loved sports and played baseball for many years. He also bowled for many years and loved the Buffalo Bills.

He is survived by his wife, Sarah J. Salter Jemison; three daughters, Malinda McKenzey, Mildred Betts and Cynthia Floyd; four sons James Jr., Gary Edwards, Roderick Salter and Jim Salter; a sister, Karen Willis; and three brothers Charles, Willie and Herman.

The family will be present from 11 a.m. to noon Tuesday in Linwood Church of Christ, 2523 Main St., where services will begin at noon.
