More from Amherst's comeback

Bert Smith and his Amherst team had quite the comeback as the Tigers beat Lake Shore, 15-14.

Smith was sick all week, but was inserted in the game late when Amherst's other running back was also injured.

Amherst trailed, 14-7, and faced a third-and-15 on its 10-yard-line with two minutes to play. A bad snap was picked up by Amherst fullback Pharaoh Gayles, who pitched it back to quarterback Kevin Denny, who avoided three would-be tacklers before hittng Smith on a 40-yard pass play.

The Tigers used a hook-and-ladder (isn't that called the hook-and-lateral?) a few plays later, as Denny connected on a 10-yard pass to Joe Kubek, who lateraled to Smith, who ran 40 yards for a touchdown to make it 14-13.

Amherst kept its momentum rolling as it went for two. Smith scored on an outside toss while fullback Gayles cleared out the only defender in the way.

Alex Dennis had 16 tackles and a forced fumble for Amherst while Deangelo Flint had 10 tackles and a sack.
