Jerome J. Schober Jr. of Depew, a retired Cheektowaga police officer, died Monday in Hospice Buffalo. He was 68.
Born in Buffalo, Schober served in the Coast Guard from 1959 to 1963 before being honorably discharged. He joined the Cheektowaga police force in 1970 and served until 1990.
Schober was well-liked by residents and respected in the department, according to Cheektowaga police.
"The Police Department received several letters from citizens complementing Jerry on the helpfulness and kindness he showed them during stressful situations," Capt. John Glascott said in a statement.
Schober also attended a basic training course at the Erie County Sheriff's Training Academy and often helped train new Cheektowaga police officers, Glascott pointed out.
Schober was a member of Coast Guard Post 1529, American Legion, in the City of Tonawanda.
He is survived by his wife, the former Madonna H. Wilde; two sons, Jerome J. III and John C.; three sisters, Ann Sturgess, Denise Kulniszewski and Michele Woeppel; and three brothers, Richard, Norman and Mark Rebadow.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be offered at 10 a.m. Tuesday in Resurrection Catholic Church at Como Park Boulevard and Union Road in Cheektowaga.
Prayers will precede the Mass at 9:30 in the Melvin J. Sliwinski Funeral Home, 5090 Transit Road, Cheektowaga.
