The world of extreme sports is mostly foreign to those of us raised on baseball and basketball. Our only experience with it is watching our sons and daughters on skateboards and snowboards and making the occasional trip to the emergency room.
One of the most disconcerting things is its connection to a lifestyle that appears to be self destructive. My age is showing here, but that's all I can think of in the wake of the recent death of skateboarding icon Van Wastell in Berlin.
It sounds as if he was living a life that is every parent's nightmare. Click here for the New York Times story on Van Wastell.
It's also clear he was very talented, or sick, in the vernacular. Click here for a video of Wastell.
