The Buffalo Philharmonic Orchestra Volunteer Foundation will present "Catch the Beat With the Maestro" at 6 p.m. Oct. 30 in Transit Valley Country Club, East Amherst. BPO Music Director JoAnn Falletta will demonstrate the art of directing an orchestra. Michael Ludwig, BPO violinist and concertmaster, clarinetist Robert Alemany and Cheektowaga Community Symphony Orchestra conductor John Landis will encourage audience participation and give attendees a chance to wave the baton.

Tickets to the benefit event are $95 each and include hors d'oeuvres, a gourmet dinner, wine and gift.

Dr. Takako Michii and Sally Roy-Moehlau are co-chairmen.

Stan Nowak is chairman of "An Evening in Warsaw," the annual Polonaise Ball, to be sponsored by the Polish Arts Club of Buffalo on Saturday in Shanghai Red's, 2 Temple Terrace. Cindy Baumgartner is co-chairwoman. Cocktails at 6:30 p.m. will precede dinner. Music will be by the Continental Orchestra of Greg Docenko, and dancing will begin with the traditional polonaise. The Chiari & Syringomyelia Research Foundation, Column of Hope, will hold its annual fundraising gala Saturday in the Hyatt Regency Buffalo with cocktails at 6 p.m., and dinner at 7:30. Laura Kane-Punyon will be mistress of ceremonies. Dr. Andrew Cappuccino, who treated Kevin Everett of the Buffalo Bills, and Dr. Lee Guterman will speak.

Niagara Sailing Club will have an Oktoberfest at 6 p.m. Saturday in the clubhouse. Brian and Jill Atkinson, Tom and Linda Schultz and Ross and Sally Kaiser will be hosts.


Kathy Canzone, president of the New York State Federation of Women's Clubs, and President-elect Margaret Brunson will be the featured speakers at the 2008 Greater Western District meeting at 9:30 a.m. Saturday in Protocol Restaurant, Amherst.
