Joe Vogl of Bishop Timon-St. Jude and Johnathan Snyder of St. Francis played equally well Monday.
Both seniors shot even-par 72s to share co-medalist honors at the All-Catholic Golf Championship at Harvest Hill Golf Center in Orchard Park. Ideal conditions greeted a field of 54 golfers from the nine schools in the Monsignor Martin Association.
Vogl also led the Tigers to the League AA team title with a 482, three strokes better than runner-up St. Joe's. Niagara Catholic was the League A winner.
Vogl has been Timon's most steady golfer all season. He three-putted twice but made up for it with birdies on Nos. 8, 9 and 18. "My putting on the front nine was really good, but on the back nine the speed was a little off," said Vogl. "I just got up and down for pars and kept myself in the fairway."
James Blackwell of St. Joe's, a freshman, hung with Vogl the whole day to finish with a 74. They were tied coming to No. 18 when Blackwell hit a rock with his second shot and had to settle for a bogey while Vogl birdied.
Snyder's round included 16 pars, a bogey on No. 8 and a chip-in on No. 9. He saved par out of the bunker on No. 1 from 190 yards out.
"The greens held big time," said Snyder. "Any shot that you hit was really holding and the fairways were in nice shape. There really wasn't a bad lie throughout the course."
The team title for Timon comes on the heels of a third-place finish behind Nichols and Canisius during the regular season. Vogl, Dave Taylor, Pat Fahey, Joe Aldrich, Matt Grochala and Dave Scarcello combined to win it.
