A Mass of Christian Burial for Meaghan Grotz, a recipient of a double lung transplant nearly four years ago, will be offered at 10 a.m. Wednesday in St. Stephen Catholic Church, 2100 Baseline Road, Grand Island.
Miss Grotz died Friday. She was 21.
She was born with cystic fibrosis. Despite the genetic degenerative condition, she played soccer and the clarinet as part of an effort to lead a normal life. After her condition worsened, she received the transplant her senior year in high school.
"It gave her a second chance. She didn't care how long she had, she just wanted a second chance," said her mother, Kate. "It gave her all the things she wanted to do, and then some."
Miss Grotz graduated from Grand Island High School in 2005 and attended Canisius College and, more recently, Buffalo State College. She also did speaking and fundraising on behalf of organ donation programs, including Upstate New York Transplant Services.
She is survived by her parents, Timothy and Mary Catherine, and a grandmother, Joan Drexelius.
