Week Six Saturday: Bring on rivalries & playoffs

We've got posts on Canisius' win over St. Francis, Jamestown's comeback at Clarence and Orchard Park's pounding of Lancaster (just check out "Recent Posts" at right).

And we've only got one week to go.

Here's some more news and notes that we couldn't fit into the the roundup in today's paper.

"We're really starting to peak here in the second half of the season," said Kenmore West coach Rich Harris after the Blue Devils moved to 4-2 with a convincing win over Lockport.

"We're playing nice on offense and defense, and we're healthy. We've got the big rivalry game this week and then we head into the playoffs and maybe we can do some damage. It looks like we're in that Orchard Park bracket again. We'd be facing them for the third time in 12 months."

Ken West's Tim Hersey wasn't the only back with five touchdowns Friday.

Eric Ippolito led the way with five scores as Fredonia won handily at Olean, 40-20. The Hillbillies outrushed the Huskies, 420-96. Fredonia seems to be just fine after its loss to Lackawanna … it went down the road to Olean and came back with a 40-20 victory.

The next game for Kenmore West is against rival Kenmore East. Mike Doherty of the Bulldogs (1-4, 1-5) stood out against Sweet Home as he ran 15 times for 70 yards, caught a touchdown pass and had a 93-yard kickoff return that was halted at the 1.

The game-winning touchdown for JFK against Wilson was made possible by quarterback Daron Lipscomb's 1-yard TD run, followed by Adam Bartoszek's two-point conversion run, which tied the game at 14-14 in the fourth quarter. Josh Klyczek, who caught the game-winning pass, had nine carries for 84 yards and added eight tackles.

Williamsville East's shutout came thanks to performances like those of Ben Khechen (10 tackles), Ryan Tideswell (five tackles, sack, fumble recovery) and Isiah Rifkin (five tackles, three sacks).

Mike Smith had 10 tackles while Matt Anderson (eight carries, 50 yards) had nine for Grover Cleveland.

Burgard got a much-needed win. Samari Chaney gain 85 yards on five carries and also had six tackles and two interceptions on defense, where William White had 13 tackles and a sack.

Cody Kelso caught two touchdown passes for St. Mary's while Alex Elwell had seven tackles and Scott Ickowski had six tackles and a sack.

Another week, another rout for Clymer (6-0). Nick Heil ran for 134 yards and three touchdowns on 14 carries while Andy Bemis had 77 rushing yards and 45 receiving in a 28-0 win over Panama.

Ryan Bialaszewski carried 23 times for 168 yards and two touchdowns for Brocton (4-2), which stopped a fourth-quarter two-point conversion run attempt by West Valley (3-3) in a 20-18 win.

Bialaszewski added 12 tackles while Derek Cook had 11 for Brocton. Ben Boburg had 222 yards on just eight carries for the Wildcats.

Nate Newton carried 25 times for 204 yards, Matt Thompson had 26 carries for 161 yards and both had a pair of touchdown runs in a 30-point first quarter as Forestville (5-1) marched past Sherman, 48-25. Ben Crane had 12 tackles, a sack and recovered a fumble. Mike Reed had 267 yards passing and three touchdowns for Sherman (0-6).
