This Day in Buffalo Sports History

Oct. 12, 2007 -- We didn't know it at the time, but apparently this was the night when Baby Joe Mesi won his last professional fight, a one-round knockout of Shannon Miller in Lincoln, R.I. (2007). Here's the way The Buffalo News reported the story:

"LINCOLN, R.I. -- Town of Tonawanda heavyweight Joe Mesi called it a 'Catch-22' but was nonetheless thrilled with his first-round knockout victory Friday night.

"Whenever you get a first-, second- or third-round knockout it's always that way," Mesi said after polishing off Shannon Miller in 2 minutes, 51 seconds for the 36th victory of his perfect professional career. "Sure, you want the work but at the same time it means you've had a very good performance."

As we know now, Mesi unexpectedly moved into the political arena this year. He's running for the State Senate.
