Niagara will be adding women's golf to its varsity sports offering for the 2009-2010 academic season.
The athletic department has been looking to add a women's sport for some time and athletic director Ed McLaughlin said that golf was a good fit. There are solid high school girls' golf programs to draw from throughout New York state along with the New England area -- geographic regions which make up a large percentage of Niagara's student population. Additionally, the sport is one with low overhead costs which should allow for the Purple Eagles to be competitive rather quickly.
McLaughlin said he hopes to hire a coach this semester and that the program will be partially funded on the same model as the school's other Olympic sports.
