2 convictions for DWI bring prison term of up to 7 years

A Salamanca man was sentenced Monday in Cattaraugus County Court to up to seven years in prison for two driving while intoxicated convictions in the City of Salamanca.

Scott A. Vaughn, 37, was sentenced by Judge Larry M. Himelein to serve one to three years and fined of $1,000 for his conviction of DWI and driving without a license Aug. 26, 2007 when his blood alcohol count was 0.14 percent.

Vaughn was further sentenced to 1 1/3 to four years in prison and fined $2,000 for his conviction of DWI July 18 when he was driving with a count of 0.15 percent.

District Attorney Edward M. Sharkey said Vaughn must serve the sentences consecutively.

In another sentencing, Steven Aloi, 52, of Olean, now in the county jail, was sentenced to one to three years in prison for each of his convictions of first-degree unlawful imprisonment and third-degree attempted criminal possession of a weapon Dec. 20 in the City of Olean, where he abducted a woman and placed her in danger of physical injury. Prison terms will be served consecutively.

Gary G. Chapman Jr., 34, of Olean, was sentenced to four months in the county jail, five years' probation and restitution for his conviction of third-degree attempted burglary Dec. 27-28 at Buffalo Crushed Stone in Machias.

Nov. 24 has been set for sentencing several who pleaded guilty:

*Robert E. Calkins Jr., 23, of Salamanca, pleaded guilty to DWI and driving without a license Aug. 2 in New Albion.

*Mark H. Pitts. 40, of Scio, pleaded guilty to DWI March 18, 2007, in Portville.

*Barbara A. Goodemote, 46, of Delevan, pleaded guilty to DWI Dec. 7 in Yorkshire.

*William J. Brow, 33, of Olean, pleaded guilty to fifth-degree attempted criminal sale of a controlled substance, Oxycodone, May 31 in the City of Olean.

*Michael A. Gordon, 19, of Jamestown, will be sentenced Jan. 5 for his plea to third-degree attempted burglary and petit larceny May 20 in South Valley, where he stole items from a restaurant.

*Ronald Harris, 37, of Buffalo, will be sentenced Jan. 12 for his guilty plea to fifth-degree criminal possession of a controlled substance, cocaine, Dec. 14 in the City of Olean.

Sharkey said several others were arraigned and entered pleas of not guilty:

*James J. Connelly, 76, of Bradford, Pa., pleaded not guilty to a grand jury indictment charging assault on a police officer, second-degree assault, first- and second-degree reckless endangerment, DWI, reckless driving and several traffic violations March 12 in the City of Olean.

*Richard Farner, 19, of Otto, pleaded not guilty to third-degree burglary, fourth-degree grand larceny and petit larceny July 5 and Nov 2, 2007, in the towns of Ashford, Yorkshire, New Albion and Otto, where he stole items valued at over $1,000.

*Jason L. Dille, 34 of Great Valley, and Frank Jones, 26, of Salamanca, each pleaded not guilty to a joint indictment charging fourth-degree criminal possession of a controlled substance, cocaine, and unlawful possession of marijuana April 18 in the City of Salamanca.

*Jeffrey A. Havers, 32, of Salamanca, pleaded not guilty to first-degree sexual abuse and endangering the welfare of a child March 2 in Little Valley.
