>State court system launches Hispanic Heritage Month

Free refreshments and Spanish pastries will be available as the state court system kicks off Hispanic Heritage Month from noon to 2 p.m. Tuesday in Erie County Hall, 92 Franklin St.

Miguel Santos, a Buffalo Hispanic leader, will be guest speaker. The event, sponsored by the Diversity Steering Committee of the Buffalo-based Eighth Judicial District, will be held in the Ceremonial Courtroom on the second floor.

City Court Judge Betty Calvo-Torres, the only Hispanic woman to serve on the city bench, also will speak.

>Tae kwon do event aids Women & Children's

Master Chong's World Class Tae Kwon Do, in conjunction with the Children's Miracle Network, will sponsor the annual Kicking for Miracles event to benefit Women & Children's Hospital from noon to 4 p.m. Saturday.

Kicking for Miracles will occur simultaneously at four area shopping centers: the Walden Galleria, Eastern Hills Mall, Boulevard Mall and McKinley Mall.

At this event, the largest of its kind in the United States, more than 400 students of Master Chong's World Class Tae Kwon Do will use their skills to break more than 3,000 boards.

Last year, this event raised $60,000 for Women & Children's Hospital.

>Voter registration scheduled on 2 dates

Anyone wishing to register to vote in November's elections may do so on Tuesday, or on Saturday, in the conference room of Lancaster Town Hall.

On Tuesday, the hours will be 5 to 9 p.m., according to the Erie County Board of Elections, which is sponsoring the two-day registration event. On Saturday, hours will be 1 to 9 p.m.
