Week Five Friday kicks off

The standings -- and polls -- could look a whole lot different after this weekend, and the playoff picture will start to sharpen up.

7:15 p.m. I'm in our version of command central tonight in the office, but I may try and sneak down the road to Tifft Farms to catch some of St. Joe's at Bishop Timon-St. Jude. If Fredonia was playing at Lackawanna, I'd check it out, but it's the other way around.

8:04 p.m. Our first result just came in. As usual, it's from the 5 p.m. Harvard Cup game. East won its first game of the season by beating McKinley, 6-0. The Macks have won the last three championships but they're 0-3 in the Harvard Cup and 0-4 overall.

8:39 p.m. Just got a call from Lackawanna basketball coach Tim Foley that the Steelers are up, 30-7, at halftime in Fredonia. Wow. I'm heading out the door to see if I can catch some drama at Timon.

8:40 p.m. OK, now I'm going -- after a call that Nichols lost, 14-13, at Section V power Charles Finney.

9:18 p.m. Back from a brief stop in South Buffalo, where St. Joe's had a 24-8 lead on Timon with 7:13 to play. I walked in as the third quarter ended, and Timon continued a drive that it turned over on downs inside the St. Joe's 20. St. Joe's was churning its way up the field when Timon called timeout and I figured I'd head back to the office for the upcoming crush of phone calls.

10:32 p.m. Calls are coming in fast and furious. Orchard Park had a close call with Frontier, Lancaster scored the only touchdown of the game to beat Clarence and Southwestern routed Allegany-Limestone. Check tonight's high school scoreboard for more updates and I'll be back here later with more.

12:20 a.m. Just got the last few scores to complete the scoreboard (linked above). I just had to call around to get the scores for Randolph at Frewsburg, Maple Grove at Franklinville, Hinsdale at Brocton and Niagara Catholic at Walsh. In all cases the road team won. The policy is that the home team should call in the box score no matter what the result; often the winning team calls the game, but tonight we had plenty of calls from the home losing teams. The News covers all of Western New York and we need cooperation from all of Western New York schools.

Did you check out a game tonight? Give us a report below.
