Western New York has produced its share of Division I athletes, including several who came from the same family. Good luck finding another one that can boast the success the five Gronkowski brothers have achieved in recent years.
Gordie was a star baseball player at the University of Jacksonville and was playing for Single A Cedar Rapids before running into back problems. Dan is playing tight end for Maryland. Chris is an H-back at Arizona. He shares the huddle, and his off-campus house, with Rob, who plays tight end.
All four earned Division I scholarships that would have amounted to about $550,000, and there could be a fifth one on the way. Glenn Gronkowski is a sophomore on the Williamsville North football team who played varsity baseball as a freshman. His brothers say he could wind up being the best of the bunch, if you could imagine.
Their father, Gordie, co-founder of the G&G Fitness chain, set them up with fitness equipment and started them in the right direction, but he never pushed them. They ended up pushing each other and creating the greatest collection of athletes from one family in Western New York history.
The family gave me an inside look for an in-depth story about the five boys and their relationship with each other. Let me put it this way: You couldn't ask for a better combination of intelligence, athletics and kindness.
Look for the feature in Saturday's editions.
