Cross country programs will get new shoes

Participants in high school cross country programs in Buffalo, Albion, City of Tonawanda, Lewiston-Porter and Barker will receive 350 pairs of training shoes with proceeds from Fleet Feet Sports' "Fleet Feet 15K -- Run into Buffalo" race held on Labor Day.

20 will be honored at dinner Saturday

More than 800 guests are expected to attend the 36th annual Black Achievers in Industry awards dinner at 7 p.m. Saturday in Adam's Mark Hotel.

Preceding the dinner will be a reception, starting at 6.

The annual dinner, sponsored by 1490 Enterprises, recognizes outstanding contributions in community service, volunteerism, corporate leadership and entrepreneurship in the African-American community.

This year, 20 people will be honored for their work in the community and special awards. The Rev. Darius G. Pridgen, pastor of True Bethel Baptist Church, will be given the Award of Excellence and former Common Council President George K. Arthur will receive the Legends Award.

Proceeds from the program will to 1490 Inc., 1490 Estates Senior Housing, the Erma D. Robinson Educational Incentive Scholarship and the Willie Hutch Jones Educational Sports Program.
