Stephen E. Korta, an active churchman who worked for American Airlines for more than four decades, died Monday in Hospice Buffalo, Cheektowaga. He was 89.
Mr. Korta, who was born in Buffalo, began working for American Airlines in 1939 as a Morse code Teletype operator. He retired in 1980 as the station manager for the airline in Buffalo.
Mr. Korta also was employed by Amigone Funeral Home for many years.
Active in many organizations, Mr. Korta was a fourth-degree member of the Knights of Columbus, active in Catholic Charities and a member of the American Airlines Vanguards.
A parishioner of St. John Gualbert Catholic Church, Mr. Korta served as an extraordinary minister for Holy Communion, was a lector and member of the Finance Council, and served as vice president of the Holy Name Society.
Mr. Korta is survived by his wife of nearly 63 years, the former Stacey M. Polefka; and a son, Stephen E. II.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be offered at 9:30 a.m. Saturday in St. John Gualbert Church, Gualbert Avenue and Doat Street, Cheektowaga. Prayers will be said at 8:30 in Amigone Funeral Home, 5200 Sheridan Drive, Amherst.
