Warsaw mother accused of leaving baby in car

WARSAW -- A Warsaw woman was arrested Monday for leaving her 9-month-old child in the car while she was shopping in a supermarket, state police said.

Shannon E. Folts, 27, was charged with endangering the welfare of a child. State police found no parent or guardian around the child. About 30 minutes later, they found Folts shopping in a Tops store and arrested her, police said. The child was placed in the custody of other family members.

One driver dies in truck, one hurt in Thorold crash

THOROLD, Ont. -- The driver of a pickup died inside his burning vehicle following a two-vehicle crash Tuesday morning, Niagara Regional Police said.

The crash occurred just after 10 a.m. on Merritt Road near Niagara Street. The driver, whose identity was not released, was eastbound on Merritt and crossed the center line, hitting the westbound van.

Both drivers were trapped in their vehicles. Attempts to free the driver of the pickup, which burst into flames, were unsuccessful. He was pronounced dead at the scene.

The van driver, identified only as a 56-year-old Welland male, was taken to Welland County General Hospital with injuries described as serious.

Massachusetts sex offender accused of failing to register

BATAVIA -- A Massachusetts man faces felony charges of failing to register as a sex offender following his arrest Tuesday by city police.

George Dagraca, 35, of Thomas Avenue, was the subject of an investigation that began a month ago with a report that a man from Massachusetts had moved to Batavia in mid-August and failed to register with police.

The investigation showed that he did finally register more than two weeks after moving here.
