While Nebraska interim AD Tom Osborne searches for a new coach, he taking it upon himself to sell the program to recruits during a very critical time of the year for college football programs.
“I’m going to hopefully go recruiting on Thursday and
Friday,” Osborne told reporters on Tuesday. “I’ll go talk to some players. Probably both (in-home visits and official visits) if I can pass the
test. If I don’t pass the test, I won’t be able to go out, so I hope I can
remember enough to get it passed.”
It's highly unusual for an AD to go on the road recruiting, but since the Cornhuskers don't have a coach and since Osborne has long been considered the face of the program, it makes sense.
“I’ve never seen an AD go on the road,” said Jeremy Crabtree
of Rivals.com. “I’ve seen Athletic Directors make phone calls and we’ve
seen them get involved with recruiting, but to see one go out on the road, no
that’s definitely a rarity.”
As for the coaching search, which involves UB's Turner Gill, LSU defensive coordinator Bo Pelini and Wake Forest coach Jim Grobe, Osborne said he's still, "talking to a few people."
He also indicated he hasn't offered the job to anyone and he hopes to wrap up the search, "sooner than later."
Meanwhile, Gill was in Tennessee recruiting for UB.
