>Campbell woman indicted in untaxed cigarettes case
OLEAN -- A Cattaraugus County grand jury has indicted a woman with attempting to transport more than 10,000 untaxed cigarettes from the Town of Olean.
Wendy Austin, 44, of Campbell was indicted on charges of attempting to evade cigarette tax, possession of untaxed cigarettes and operating a vehicle out of class on Dec. 1, when she was allegedly attempting to transport the untaxed cigarettes to avoid paying taxes.
A second indictment also was reported to Judge Michael Nenno.
Eric K. Pierce, 24, of Perrysburg was indicted on charges of failure to register with the state sex offender registry between May and June 2006. Pierce was to register in the county on the anniversary of his original registration date and allegedly failed to return his verification form to the state.
>Man trying to stop carjacking is dragged
A Davidson Avenue man stopped thieves from carjacking his vehicle Sunday night, but he ended up being dragged by the moving vehicle before it crashed.
Northeast District police said the man parked his vehicle in the driveway of his home in the 100 block of Davidson at about 7:50 p.m. and left it running.
When he walked across the street, three men got in the vehicle, police reported. The man sitting behind the wheel began driving east on Davidson, but the victim ran back and grabbed onto his vehicle and was dragged. The vehicle ended up crashing into a nearby address and the three men ran away.
One of the men left behind his cell phone, which was recovered by police.
It was unclear if the victim suffered any injuries during the attempted carjacking.
