Richard A. Mead, a retired Hamburg business executive and longtime volunteer, died on Tuesday in Millard Fillmore Hospital. He was 77.
A lifelong Hamburg resident, he retired 12 years ago after a long career with his family business, the D.J. Mead & Sons paper products distributorship in Depew.
An Army veteran, Mr. Mead was a graduate of St. Francis High School and Canisius College. He enjoyed volunteering with the Lakeshore Fire Company and with the St. Vincent de Paul Society at his church.
"He liked helping needy families get clothes, furniture and food, especially for Thanksgiving and Christmas," said one of his daughters, Patricia McKenna. "But he was very humble about it."
An avid fisherman and woodworker, Mr. Mead was a member of the Southtowns Walleye Association and the Knights of Columbus.
Besides his daughter, he is survived by the former Janet Cannon, his wife since 1954; two other daughters, Sharon Mead and Kathleen Emery; two sons, Timothy and Donald; and a sister, Jean Fons.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be offered at 11 a.m. today in St. Mary of the Lake Catholic Church, 4737 S. Lake Shore Road, Hamburg.
